Typically, inpatient and residential programs are the same. However, some refer to inpatients as shorter-term and medically orientated facilities. While a residential is axed on group or one-on-one therapy with access to medical services. In Canada, we do not necessarily use that distinction.
A residential or inpatient program is an in-house recovery service; that is, the person stays on the premises for the duration of the treatment. After some time on the program, most centers will allow the person to go out on the weekends. This criterion varies depending on the facility, and of course, visits are allowed and encouraged.
Short-term programs last 21 to 30 days, whereas long-term programs extend from 30 days or more. Some facilities, such as Teen Challenge, offer a 12-month program for adults.
Not everybody with addiction has the same needs or case levels. First, an addiction specialist must assess the person’s situation and determine the necessary level of care.
For example, an individual with a long-standing problem with drugs and alcohol will most likely benefit more from a long-term program. Because chronic substance use can lead to deep-rooted habits and patterns that may take time to address. The person has enough time to break these patterns and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
Another example is an individual who has tried shorter programs but relapsed. This indicates that habits and patterns need a longer address.
In short, a long-term rehab offers the time, tools and support necessary to create a solid foundation.
This type of treatment can be good when the addiction is relatively recent. For example, substance use hasn’t caused severe physical, emotional, or social consequences.
Another example would be individuals with supportive family, friends, and a stable home environment. A short-term program can provide the necessary tools to begin recovery but should include supportive surroundings.
Also, individuals highly motivated to make significant life changes might benefit from a short-term program.
The price for private treatment varies. On Vancouver Island and across BC, prices range from several thousand dollars to tens of thousands for a luxury rehab.
A growing number of facilities now accept insurance. But you must check with your insurance policy and the chosen center.
Many of the addiction treatment centers we refer to accept payment plans, and we are also aware of others that do. It is on a one-on-one basis with the facility.
There are possible medical loans offered from outside sources, like Medicard.
People should consider finding support with Al-Anon or Nar-Anon when they are affected by someone else’s alcohol or drug use.
These groups provide a safe, nonjudgmental, and confidential environment where individuals can share experiences and find guidance without fear of criticism.
